Summary

** Please include spoiler warnings in your reviews for the readers who haven’t had a chance to read WISH YOU WERE HERE yet!**

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author comes a deeply moving novel about the resilience of the human spirit in a moment of crisis。

Diana O’Toole is perfectly on track。 She will be married by thirty, done having kids by thirty-five, and move out to the New York City suburbs, all while climbing the professional ladder in the cutthroat art auction world。 She’s not engaged just yet, but she knows her boyfriend, Finn, a surgical resident, is about to propose on their romantic getaway to the Galápagos—days before her thirtieth birthday。 Right on time。

But then a virus that felt worlds away has appeared in the city, and on the eve of their departure, Finn breaks the news: It’s all hands on deck at the hospital。 He has to stay behind。 You should still go, he assures her, since it would be a shame for all of their nonrefundable trip to go to waste。 And so, reluctantly, she goes。

Almost immediately, Diana’s dream vacation goes awry。 The whole island is now under quarantine, and she is stranded until the borders reopen。 Completely isolated, she must venture beyond her comfort zone。 Slowly, she carves out a connection with a local family when a teenager with a secret opens up to Diana, despite her father’s suspicion of outsiders。

Diana finds herself examining her relationships, her choices, and herself—and wondering if when she goes home, she too will have evolved into someone completely different。

I felt seen for my mental illness and then erased in one page。 I grieved with Diana when she discovered she wasn't real。 Were these character elements really necessary? Why do this? I don't think I can forgive Picoult for that。 I understand these are all fictional characters。 But there was too much grief, too much loss, too much everything in this book。 Picoult really missed the mark with this one。 。。。more

I am simply in love with this book。 I wasn't sure how I would feel about reading a book that has Covid as its center focus, but this was wonderful and emotional and even had one of the best twists I've ever read in a Jodi Picoult book! While your fiance is stuck in New York City working in a hospital right when Covid explodes in the city? Let me start by saying that I generally like Jodi Picoult novels, though I have found myself burned out by them lately。 Still, that doesn't deter me from at least giving them a try。 This book, like all of Picoult's books, is highly readable。 I fell into the story quickly and found the whole story to be unputdownable。 However, I'm not totally sure how I felt about a book about Covid。。。it maybe feels a little too soon for me? I know Picoult felt the urgency to document this experience and I can really appreciate it, but sometimes it feels like some time needs to pass before a fair and balanced look at the issue can be presented more appropriately。 This version feels very one-slanted and perpetuates a lot of things that I don't believe have been determined to be 100% factual yet。 I truly wonder how this will stand up against the test of time。 。。。more

Life is good for Diana, an art specialist at Sotheby's, and Finn, a surgical resident at a New York hospital - they're about to fly to the Galápagos Islands where Diana will celebrate her 30th birthday - and where she's pretty sure Finn intends to propose。But it's March 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic is about to hit。 Finn, as a hospital doctor, is needed on the frontline but urges Diana to travel without him。 She arrives on Isabela, though, to find an island that is basically closed, with no hot Life is good for Diana, an art specialist at Sotheby's, and Finn, a surgical resident at a New York hospital - they're about to fly to the Galápagos Islands where Diana will celebrate her 30th birthday - and where she's pretty sure Finn intends to propose。But it's March 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic is about to hit。 Finn, as a hospital doctor, is needed on the frontline but urges Diana to travel without him。 She arrives on Isabela, though, to find an island that is basically closed, with no hotel room, imminent way of getting home - or, with internet that's at best intermittent, of easily contacting Finn。However there are worse places to wait out a global pandemic, as Diana explores the incredibly beautiful island and becomes drawn into the lives of the people she meets, particularly troubled teenager Beatriz and her father Gabriel, and reflects on her own life up to this point。Interspersed and contrasting starkly with Diana's narrative are emails from Finn, horrifying in their unrelenting depiction of life and death on the frontline。 This book is steeped in the world of Covid, and prospective readers should be aware of that - it will not be for everyone。 Nevertheless both the harsh realities of the hospital and the outside lockdown world of furlough, flour shortages and two-metre distancing are brilliantly rendered。The story takes an unexpected turn around the halfway point, upending what we thought we knew。Few of the reviews I've read have touched much on Diana's relationship with her mother Hannah, an acclaimed photographer now living with dementia, but I found this a very thought-provoking and ultimately curiously satisfying part of the story。 Art is another theme, including the work of Toulouse-Lautrec (on this note, I'm not quite sure of the point of having a character who so closely resembled Yoko Ono that she was basically the same person with a different name)。Overall, a captivating if, at times, distressing read which has left me hankering after a trip to the Galápagos Islands。 。。。more

So, I wanted to start off by saying that this will be hard writing a review for this book。 I’m not really sure what to make of it, and I don’t really want to give the plot away。 While I did enjoy the book, there were parts (which I’m not going to mention due to spoilers) that I just didn’t like。 This is the first book I have ever read about COVID, and I actually enjoyed that the author wrote about it realistically。First off, I think the book was very well written。 I wasn’t really invested in thi So, I wanted to start off by saying that this will be hard writing a review for this book。 I’m not really sure what to make of it, and I don’t really want to give the plot away。 While I did enjoy the book, there were parts (which I’m not going to mention due to spoilers) that I just didn’t like。 This is the first book I have ever read about COVID, and I actually enjoyed that the author wrote about it realistically。First off, I think the book was very well written。 I wasn’t really invested in this book until about Chapter 5, which was about halfway through。 With that being said, I feel like the first part of the book was all over the place。 It kind of made sense why after the fact, but as I was reading, I felt there needed to be more transitions throughout different scenes。 However, I thought the writing was still engaging enough that I didn’t put it down。Some of my favorite parts of the book were the emails from Finn。 I actually didn’t realize how bad it was for health care workers during COVID until I read his emails。 Those really gave insights into how it was during those first few initial months。 I also enjoyed learning Diana’s backstory throughout the book。 I feel like it gave a great insight into what her character was like before COVID。By Part 2, I basically fell in love with this book。 It was so interesting to read and learn how everything played out。 It made so much more sense by then, even though I had basically already guessed what happened。Oh, that’s the other thing I wanted to mention。 This book was very predictable。 Nothing really happened in the book that I didn’t predict。 Even though it was predictable, I still enjoyed it and highly suggest going into this book without reading the plot (which is why I’m not mentioning the plot at all in this review)。 Oh, and the blurb makes no sense for the book at all。 I read it and then started reading the book and wondered if the person who wrote it actually read the book。 Maybe the book was edited, so Diana’s relationships with everyone changed by the time I received it? Either way, I do think it needs to be updated。Let’s talk about the ending without giving anything away。 So, I didn’t like how the book ended at all。 For starters, it kind of made me leave with more questions than answers。 I completely understand why it stopped where it did to let the reader’s mind imagine what happens next, but I really just wanted to know。 Secondly, I still didn’t understand Diana’s decision in the end。 It really didn’t make much sense to me why she decided what she did。 Maybe it’s just me, or maybe I just needed more insight into why she made that decision。Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book。 Jodi Picoult captures you in Diana’s world and how different people experienced COVID, with the common theme of feeling isolated。 The author’s note at the end of the book actually made everything in the book come together and opened my eyes to how other people had experienced this pandemic。 I received this book for free via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I’m not sure there is a way to review this without spoilers, but I’m going to try…First off, I’ve read most of Jodi Picoult’s novels over the years and I have a love/hate relationship with them。 I think she’s an extremely talented storyteller but I often find her books to be emotionally manipulative, particularly with regards to the plot twists。 This one had a DOOZY and I personally found it difficult to switch gears。 I also never felt a real connection to the protagonist and the focus on COVID I’m not sure there is a way to review this without spoilers, but I’m going to try…First off, I’ve read most of Jodi Picoult’s novels over the years and I have a love/hate relationship with them。 I think she’s an extremely talented storyteller but I often find her books to be emotionally manipulative, particularly with regards to the plot twists。 This one had a DOOZY and I personally found it difficult to switch gears。 I also never felt a real connection to the protagonist and the focus on COVID while we’re still in the midst of the pandemic just felt like too much, too soon。 It was both heartbreaking and informative to get a glimpse into the front lines of the pandemic response in NYC and the theme of self discovery was compelling, but this one just didn’t grab me the way some of her other works have。 Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review! 。。。more

(thank you to NetGalley for my copy of this book!)Dang, this book。 I honestly hated the first half of it。 I came here to look at reviews when I was in the middle of reading it and was shocked it had so many good reviews。 But based on the good reviews, I decided to continue on and I'm glad I did because the book definitely redeemed itself。 However, I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't go into too many plot details。I would recommend staying away from Jodi Picoult's newest if you're not ready (thank you to NetGalley for my copy of this book!)Dang, this book。 I honestly hated the first half of it。 I came here to look at reviews when I was in the middle of reading it and was shocked it had so many good reviews。 But based on the good reviews, I decided to continue on and I'm glad I did because the book definitely redeemed itself。 However, I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't go into too many plot details。I would recommend staying away from Jodi Picoult's newest if you're not ready to read lots of details about the early days of Covid just yet。 This book is a lot。 One of the characters is a doctor and he writes very detailed descriptions of everything he's going through。 In some ways, this felt a little indulgent to me, though I'm not even necessarily sure if that's the right word。 Most of it is stuff you've heard from countless doctors either on the news or those whom you know in real life。 I think some day this will be incredible to read, but for the。 moment, it felt like a little too much。 I'm not holding that against Picoult, though。。。 She just happens to be one of the first novelists to have published a book during these times that's pretty focused on Covid。 Before long, I'm sure there will be a ton of them。Really, it's tough to say too much without spoiling (and it's best to go into this book unspoiled), so I'll just say if you're ready to read about some of the many trials of Covid, this is a really unique look at it。 There's also a lot to like about it that's not directly related to Covid。 I loved that the main character is an art historian working for Sotheby's and I loved her relationship with her best friend。 The details from the Galapagos are beautiful and will likely make anyone want to take a trip there (though maybe not during a pandemic)。 Overall, I'm glad I read this book and I'm sure there will be much discussion on it when it's officially published in November。 。。。more

Jodi Picoult is definitely one of my favorite authors and her last book, Wish You Were Here, did not disappoint。 At first I was not sure that I wanted to read a book based around the Covid-19 pandemic, since we are still living it and I have found reading to be a way to escape it。 However, because it was a Jodi Picoult's book, I decided to take a chance and see how she would handle it。 Wow, I was glad that I did! Since I don't want to give anything away, I am not going to try to retell the plot。 Jodi Picoult is definitely one of my favorite authors and her last book, Wish You Were Here, did not disappoint。 At first I was not sure that I wanted to read a book based around the Covid-19 pandemic, since we are still living it and I have found reading to be a way to escape it。 However, because it was a Jodi Picoult's book, I decided to take a chance and see how she would handle it。 Wow, I was glad that I did! Diana O'Toole has her life mapped out, and it is going exactly how she has planned。 She is convinced that her doctor boyfriend, Finn, is going to propose on their trip to the Galapagos Islands and loves that their future plans align perfectly。 When COVID-19 pops up in New York just before they are about to leave on vacation, however, Finn has no choice but to stay in NYC, working at his hospital to combat the disease。 He urges Diana to go ahead with their planned vacation, though, since they can Diana O'Toole has her life mapped out, and it is going exactly how she has planned。 She is convinced that her doctor boyfriend, Finn, is going to propose on their trip to the Galapagos Islands and loves that their future plans align perfectly。 When COVID-19 pops up in New York just before they are about to leave on vacation, however, Finn has no choice but to stay in NYC, working at his hospital to combat the disease。 He urges Diana to go ahead with their planned vacation, though, since they can't get a refund on their money。 Reluctantly, Diana goes alone and ends up on the island of Isabela the day it shuts down, under quarantine。 Diana finds herself stranded on the island, unable even to communicate with the natives since Finn was the one who spoke Spanish, and without a place to stay since the hotel closed for the quarantine。 When a local kindly takes her in, Diana finds herself growing close to the family。 As time passes, Diana is forced to slow down, appreciate what is around her, and evaluate her life back in New York。I think this may be my favorite Jodi Picoult novel to date! Picoult is known for her plot twists, but I have to say that I did not see this one coming at all。 As we all lived through the onset of the pandemic last year, everyone should be able to relate to some part of this book, even if most of us didn't get to wait it out in a paradise like Isabela! The nature and wildlife descriptions in the book were amazing and made me want to vacation there someday。 As always, Picoult's characters are well developed and realistic。 The book had me literally laughing out loud and parts, in tears at others。 I highly recommend it!Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me an ARC of this book。 。。。more

Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors。 Over the years, I have read and recommended many of her books to friends, colleagues and patrons。。 This is by far, one of her best books。 The subject matter of this book (COVID-19) is a sensitive one and could have been a little too soon to tackle for any other writer。 Jodi handles this subject with such gentleness and sensitivity while sharing the true horror of the pandemic。 For the first time, this subject didn't feel politically charged, Picoult fl Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors。 Over the years, I have read and recommended many of her books to friends, colleagues and patrons。。 This is by far, one of her best books。 The subject matter of this book (COVID-19) is a sensitive one and could have been a little too soon to tackle for any other writer。 Jodi handles this subject with such gentleness and sensitivity while sharing the true horror of the pandemic。 For the first time, this subject didn't feel politically charged, Picoult flawlessly made it a human issue, not a political one。 Diana, the main character, almost thirty with her life seemingly on track is thrown into the chaos of the pandemic, and like most of us, is forced to really consider life choices and rethink her future。 Being on an island without the comforts and safety of her home and routine really gives Diana a lot to reflect upon。 Meanwhile, in NYC her boyfriend Finn is struggling as a surgical resident in the early stages and then full impact of the pandemic。 Picoult's research is flawless on the subject and you can certainly feel her personal touches to the characters。 In true Picoult style, there is a twist that only adds to the depth of the novel (no spoilers!)。 I have become very attached to these characters。 and I am truly sad to be finished with this book as it has affected me on a personal level, and I am going to speculate that many readers will feel the same。 。。。more

I love Jodi Picoult and read all her books without even knowing what the subject is。 This book is about Covid, which we're all still living thru。 That being said, the first part of the book was pretty engaging and I was enjoying it。。。then I felt a little drained since I'm still reading about Covid in the news and it's a constant subject when talking to people。 I read books to lose myself。。。that being said, I enjoyed it just not as much as some of her others。 I love Jodi Picoult and read all her books without even knowing what the subject is。 This book is about Covid, which we're all still living thru。 That being said, the first part of the book was pretty engaging and I was enjoying it。。。then I felt a little drained since I'm still reading about Covid in the news and it's a constant subject when talking to people。 I read books to lose myself。。。that being said, I enjoyed it just not as much as some of her others。 。。。more

I knew I had to have it in this months tbr selection and I’m so pleased to say that it was an absolute 5 ⭐️ read for me。 Now i do own all of Jodi Picoults books, but I’ve only read 6 of them so far (well 7 including this one) but each book has just blown me away and, it was just so lovely to have a new book by her in my hands and for it to capture my attention so quickly and just hold it tight till that never 📖 New Review。 [PR Review copy] Thank you so much @zafree for this surprise in the post! This is a short book, in just over 300 pages she packs in a lot! This was heavy, this was gripping, emotional and just such an important story! I absolutely loved every moment of it, I was so invested in the story and when we are delivered up a shock twist of events, and then pair that with a brilliantly done cliffhanger ending that made me want to launch the book with excitement。。。this just ticked all my boxes。 Set during the Covid pandemic, and including heavy details on the medical side of things, I felt claustrophobic and emotional but it’s done in just such a brilliant way, very real and very visceral。 The other side of things we have here are all about following your own dreams and heart, making those choices and following your own path in life, which I loved!!。 It all comes together to form this powerhouse of a read, packed into a small book! But like I say the subject matter and themes are just anything but!。 I loved how twists in the story where delivered, that genuine shock I get in books always thrills me, and I sat there a few times like ‘Wait。。。。what the hell?!’ But in the best of ways。 If you are a Jodi Picoult fan I am surely confident this will tick your boxes of what you’d expect and hope for。 And if you haven’t read anything by her then wow what a place to start this would be! 🎉Wish you were here is out 25th November in Hardback and Kindle。 。。。more
